Baidu To Launch Chinese Blogging Platform

Chinese search engine Baidu, with a market cap of about $3 billion, will be launching a blogging platform on July 13. Search Enging Journal reports (but without attribution) that Cynthia He, a spokeswoman for Baidu, said in a statement: “There’s a product named Baidu Space. I can’t describe the product or give a date, except that it will be very soon and we are very excited. But we’d like to keep a little mystery for now.”
Blogging in China is tricky business to say the least. And it’s fairly competitive - Bokee, BlogCN, ChinaBlog, Sina Blog and Sohu Blog all have competitive offerings and lots of users. Nevertheless, China is a huge market (the second largest internet audience after the U.S.) and has an active blogging community. And some of the blogs are masssive.
Someday, this massive community of people writing and conversing can bring China out of the dark ages freedom-wise. The more people that blog in and about China, the better.

nothing will change the situation in China until the Chinese people insist on change. that can only happen through an understanding of what they are missing wrt the rest of the world. blogging can help but it will require more. google yahoo and microsft need to do more and stop bending over for the chinese government.

The next big growth will take place in South Asia. Use of internet is growing very fast in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Within 5 years, this market will become as big as China. So, tech cmpanies should address this market. Yahoo is doing great here but Google is negleting it

Baidu has a tab for searching mp3 online. Now that can be good for user but well… I have mix feeling about that. I will just say this Google or Yahoo will/can never put Search mp3 files online.

The wolrd of Web 2.0 not only happening in Silicon Valley. It is happening everywhere. For TechCrunch, it will be good covering Web 2.0 for China. China has the second biggest internet user in the world after US. It’s no brainer to cover Web 2.0 news from there

As a user, I think Baidu is really really good compared with many other Chinese internet services. Two of my favoriate things in Baidu: map (very complete and easy to use. Maybe not as good as google map yet, but very useful when google and other maps don’t cover China yet); and Chinese classics libary. If you do use Chinese language, those are almost irreplacable by any others; if you don’t, the whole thing just doesn’t matter.

Mike,
Baidu is the strategic tool in the hands of the government. The more people who use it the better for them.. (the regime !!)
you may also want to to readup a bit on what is called as the golden projects and also here a little on ICE
“The more people that blog in and about China, the better. ” — Better for whom ?? yeah, the Chinese parliament is considering a draft law which would - among other things– “reporting breaking news without authorization”
So Mike, in short - as professional blogger and leader in web2.0 , under the current mandates you will never be able to open a techcrunch china — Oh let me retract that -maybe it will happen hmmmmmmm 2050 ?
FWIW–WEb2.0 is not just about technologies , its also about coummities !!

Wow, it’s amazing how people here in America completely miss an important part about the Chinese: they live very differently and see things very differently than we do. I know many Chinese who, having spent many years in America, are not anywhere near as zealous for change in their home country as you people all seem to be.
The Chinese know things are not ideal in their country, but they also know that no country is perfect. They see many flaws in the American approach, and even many flaws in some of the “freedoms” we insist on here. They’re more cautious about it, and they usually don’t appreciate people like us holding our bleeding hearts in one hand while as talk about how China is “in the dark ages.”
China is a different country with different people and a different perspective. Come down off your high horse and let them sort it out for themselves if they wish to.

Thomas
Doh, should have proofread it. That last bit should be “while we talk about how China…”

EmilYang: I think your word regarding the Baidu Space is kind harsh, at least not appropriated for this audience. Just dont know what makes you think that aidu is a piece of shit?
Clark kent + Thomas: Totally agree with what you said. China is a such different country with different culture and different perspective. Like America, they are also innovative and hard-working people. They have the cool ideas. The best thing is to talk and share with each other, rather than just shut door to each other.
As the matter of fact, eBay China got beaten by a local china company, Yahoo China also got bought out to the same local Chinese company named “Aribaba”, and Google is also facing great competition thanks to baidu’s right strategy and strong performance. Chinese companies, including Baidu, reserve the respect, at least to some extend.

Baidu is great company although it’s not perfect. it does create value for chinese, and i would like to say Baidu is not a “so so substitute of Google”, but a great competitor of Google.

I just discovered how many Chinese readers you have here, Michael! I aslo found out one thing - if you write something about China, there are always a lot of comments you can earn, especially in a popular blog like TechCruch.

EmilYang ,I think your behavior makes others look down upon you .
Since you are a Chinese,y did you say such things here?if u say”chinese shit”, you are cursing you and your parents as “shit “at the same time. Why do you call yourself “shit”?
Chinese people look down upon you,and people from other countries also look down upon you.
You made us sick!
你根本不配做一个中国人。你骂了中国的同时也是在骂你和你娘是吃屎长大的。你真恶心! -
